Increases in serum myostatin concentrations following resistance training are positively associated with gains in appendicular skeletal muscle mass in older adults, challenging the view that myostatin solely inhibits muscle growth.
Do not try to manipulate your myostatin levels. This study suggests that myostatin may actually increase as part of the muscle-building process in older adults. Focus on your training and nutrition; do not worry about serum myostatin levels as a barrier to growth.
Higher increases in myostatin concentrations at the end of the intervention were significantly associated with greater improvements in appendicular skeletal muscle mass (kg) (β = 0.319, p = 0.048).
Why this rating
Preliminary findings, small sample size, and correlational nature limit causal inference.

More from this paper
- Twelve weeks of supervised resistance training significantly improves physical performance and reduces frailty prevalence in post-hospitalized older adults, regardless of whether leucine-enriched whey protein is consumed post-exercise.Moderate
- Leucine-enriched whey protein supplementation (20g whey + 3g leucine) post-exercise does not provide additional benefits for sarcopenia, muscle mass, or myokine concentrations compared to resistance training alone in post-hospitalized older adults over 12 weeks.Moderate

- Continued weekly administration of 2.4 mg subcutaneous semaglutide prevents weight regain and promotes further weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, whereas switching to placebo results in significant weight regain.Strong
