Incorporating biological factors (hunger, satiety, metabolic adaptation) into social cognitive theory improves long-term weight loss maintenance compared to traditional behavioral interventions that ignore these biological drivers.
If you are struggling to maintain weight loss despite eating right and exercising, recognize that your body is likely fighting back with increased hunger and a slower metabolism. This is a biological response, not a failure of willpower. To succeed, you must manage these biological signals directly by prioritizing high-satiety foods (high protein, fiber, low energy density) and strategic meal timing, rather than relying solely on mental discipline or distraction techniques.
One potential reason for the limited long- term effectiveness of lifestyle interventions guided by this model is that the model does not consider the important influence that biology can have on weight- relevant behaviors... We describe here a proposed revision to social cognitive theory that allows for biological factors to exist in reciprocal determinism with behavioral, environmental, and personal factors, with the goal of creating a theoretical basis for lifestyle interventions with greater personalization in order to facilitate better long- term adherence and improve weight- loss maintenance.
