High consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in adulthood and adolescence is associated with a significantly increased risk of early-onset colorectal cancer (EO-CRC) in women.
For women, reducing sugar-sweetened beverage intake, especially during adolescence and adulthood, may help lower the risk of early-onset colorectal cancer. Substituting SSBs with coffee, milk, or artificially sweetened beverages is associated with a lower risk. While this study focuses on women, the metabolic mechanisms (insulin resistance, inflammation) suggest broader applicability, but more research is needed for men.
