Intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) designed to induce weight loss significantly reduces the incidence of mild or greater depression symptoms in overweight/obese individuals with type 2 diabetes compared to diabetes support and education (DSE).
For individuals with type 2 diabetes, a structured lifestyle program focusing on modest weight loss (7%+) and regular moderate exercise, supported by behavioral counseling, can significantly lower the risk of developing depression compared to standard diabetes education alone. This suggests that the psychological benefits of structured health management may outweigh the stress of dietary restriction.
The ILI significantly reduced the incidence of mild or greater depression compared with DSE (HR = 0.85; 95% CI 0.75–0.97; P = 0.0145).
