Intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) does not significantly reduce the use of antidepressant medications (ADMs) compared to diabetes support and education (DSE) in overweight/obese individuals with type 2 diabetes.
While ILI reduces the risk of developing new depression symptoms, it does not necessarily lead to a reduction in the use of antidepressant medications for those already taking them. Clinicians should not expect ILI to replace pharmacological treatment for existing depression.
