Pharmacotherapy (Orlistat, Lorcaserin, Phentermine/Topiramate) serves as an effective adjunct to lifestyle modifications for patients with BMI >= 30 or >= 27 with comorbidities who fail to achieve adequate weight loss with lifestyle changes alone.
If lifestyle changes alone aren't enough after 6 months, discuss FDA-approved weight-loss medications with your doctor. Orlistat (120mg 3x/day) blocks fat absorption. It works best with a low-fat diet. Be aware of potential gastrointestinal side effects, which can be minimized by eating less fat. Take a multivitamin at a different time of day.
Anti-obesity medications should be viewed as adjuncts to lifestyle changes and may help patients succeed in achieving and maintaining weight loss sufficient to realize health benefits.

- Achieving a modest weight loss of 5% to 10% significantly improves cardiometabolic risk factors (HbA1c, blood pressure, lipids) and physical functioning in obese patients, even without reaching a normal BMI.Good
- Phentermine/Topiramate Extended-Release (PHEN/TPM ER) produces greater mean weight loss (up to 10.9%) compared to other pharmacotherapies and placebo when used at the highest dose (15/92 mg).Good

- Continued weekly administration of 2.4 mg subcutaneous semaglutide prevents weight regain and promotes further weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, whereas switching to placebo results in significant weight regain.Strong
