Achieving a modest weight loss of 5% to 10% significantly improves cardiometabolic risk factors (HbA1c, blood pressure, lipids) and physical functioning in obese patients, even without reaching a normal BMI.
Set a realistic goal of losing 5-10% of your body weight over 6 months. This amount of weight loss is enough to significantly improve your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol, and reduce joint pain. You do not need to reach a 'normal' BMI to get these major health benefits. Focus on small, sustainable changes like reducing calories by 500-1000 per day and exercising moderately for 150 minutes a week.
Moderate weight loss of 5% to 10% has been shown to significantly improve several patient cardiometabolic risk factors and physical functioning
Why this rating
Supported by large-scale randomized controlled trials (DPP, Look AHEAD) and pooled analyses.
