Consuming a gluten-free meal results in a significantly lower postprandial thermogenic response (calorie burn) compared to iso-caloric whole food or ultra-processed meals in young women.
If you are eating gluten-free products for weight loss, be aware that they may not offer a metabolic advantage. This study found that gluten-free meals resulted in lower calorie burning (thermogenesis) after eating compared to both whole food and ultra-processed meals, provided the calories and macronutrients were the same. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods rather than just the absence of gluten for optimal metabolic response.
The GF test meal had lower overall TEM compared to WF (mean difference: −0.055 kcal/min... p = 0.002) and PF (mean difference: −0.041 kcal/min... p = 0.022)... Absolute AUC for TEM was significant... with GF having a lower amount of calories burned compared to WF (mean difference: −20.94 kcal/meal... p = 0.008) and PF (mean difference: −14.94 kcal/meal... p = 0.04)
