Time since Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis is a significant moderator of absolute peak oxygen uptake, with longer duration associated with greater reductions in fitness.
The longer you have Type 2 Diabetes, the more your maximum oxygen uptake tends to drop. However, this decline is gradual. Prioritize exercise early in your diagnosis to preserve fitness, as the most significant drops may occur within the first 5 years.
GoodQualifiesMEDIUM confidence
Time since diabetes diagnosis (ie, diabetes duration) was a significant regression (β coefficient=−0.04 L/min per year, P=0.05).
Why this rating
Statistically significant (P=0.05) but at the threshold of significance; limited by narrow age/duration range in some cohorts.

- Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) exhibit significantly reduced cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), measured as peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), compared to healthy controls, with reductions averaging 13.9% for absolute VO2peak and 17.4% for relative VO2peak.Strong
- Cardiac diastolic function, specifically the E/e' ratio and Left Atrial Volume Index (LAVI), significantly moderates the reduction in relative peak oxygen uptake in Type 2 Diabetes patients.Good
