Age-related decline in skeletal muscle performance is driven by multifactorial mechanisms beyond sarcopenia, including excitation-contraction uncoupling, motor unit remodeling, and neural factors, which collectively reduce muscle quality and physical function.
To maintain physical function as you age, focus on more than just building muscle mass. Incorporate exercises that challenge coordination and balance, and consider the importance of neural health. A holistic approach addressing muscle, nerve, and bone health is key to preventing disability.
Emerging evidence, however, clearly shows that the decline in skeletal muscle mass is not the sole contributor to the decline in physical performance. For instance, the loss of muscle strength is also a strong contributor to reduced physical performance in the elderly. In addition, there is ample data to suggest that motor coordination, excitation–contraction coupling, skeletal integrity, and other factors related to the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems are critically important for physical performance in the elderly.
