Energy balance
Elevated serum creatine kinase (CK) following exercise is primarily a marker of cellular energy regulation and membrane permeability changes driven by AMPK, rather than a direct indicator of structural muscle damage or necrosis.
Do not use serum CK levels alone to judge workout quality or injury risk. High CK is a normal physiological response to energy demands and membrane permeability changes, often regulated by AMPK, and does not automatically imply structural damage. Focus on performance metrics and recovery feelings instead.
The mechanism(s) by which CK is cleared from the blood has not been fully elucidated, and it is likely that observed serum CK levels reflect complex interactions associated with energy status and scale of muscle disturbance... high levels of serum CK, in the absence of muscle damage or other pathological conditions, may reflect the level of enzyme tissue activity of the individual.
