Metformin use is associated with a significantly lower incidence of cancer (approx. 30% risk reduction) in type 2 diabetic patients, likely mediated by AMPK activation which suppresses tumor growth.
Taking metformin for diabetes is associated with a lower risk of developing certain cancers, particularly colon and liver cancer. This is a beneficial side effect of the drug, but it should not be used as a primary cancer prevention strategy.
