Berberine supplementation reduces atherosclerotic plaque area and inflammatory markers in animal models of cardiovascular disease.
Berberine shows promise in reducing atherosclerosis in animal studies by lowering inflammation and oxidative stress. While human trials are limited, it may be a supportive supplement for cardiovascular health, particularly for those with metabolic issues. BBR (150 mg/kg/d, p.o., 12wk) obviously treatment reduced the atherosclerotic plaque area and displayed suppression of inflammatory and oxidative markers [106]. Specifically, BBR diminished the serum levels of IL-1β and TNFα, and decreased the expression of ICAM-1, iNOS, and IL-6 in the aorta.
