Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, produced by gut bacteria from dietary fiber, have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and barrier-integrity functions, and their production declines with age and frailty.
Eat enough dietary fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) to feed your gut bacteria. They will produce SCFAs like butyrate, which protect your gut lining, reduce inflammation, and support metabolic health. This is especially important as you age.
