Aging is characterized by a specific redistribution of body composition involving increased total fat mass and visceral adiposity alongside decreased lean mass and bone density, which drives chronic low-grade inflammation (metaflammation) and increases the risk of age-related diseases independent of overall body weight or BMI.

As you age, your weight might stay the same, but your body composition changes: you gain fat (especially around the organs) and lose muscle and bone. This 'silent' change is more dangerous than being overweight. Do not rely on BMI. Focus on maintaining muscle mass through strength training and protein intake, and monitor visceral fat via imaging if possible, as this specific type of fat drives inflammation and disease risk.
