MRI is the most advanced and accurate technique for evaluating muscle quality and detecting early fatty infiltration (sarcopenia) in aging, offering superior contrast between fat and muscle compared to CT or DXA, despite higher costs and complexity.

For the most detailed look at muscle health, especially to detect early muscle loss (sarcopenia) before it becomes obvious, MRI is the best tool. It can see fat inside muscles that other scans miss. However, due to cost and availability, it is typically reserved for research or complex cases rather than routine check-ups.
