Experimental sleep restriction causes insulin resistance and metabolic dysregulation in healthy subjects via increased evening cortisol, sympathetic activation, and altered appetite hormones (leptin/ghrelin).
Prioritize consistent, sufficient sleep duration (7-9 hours) as a foundational metabolic health strategy. While the effect size on BMI is modest, sleep restriction directly induces insulin resistance and alters hunger hormones, making sleep a critical lever for metabolic control alongside diet and exercise.
