A small percentage (<1%) of ingested fructose is directly converted to plasma triglycerides in the short term, although larger doses may stimulate de novo lipogenesis over longer periods.
Eating fructose does not immediately turn into fat in your blood. While large amounts over time might affect lipids, the direct conversion is very small.
ModerateQualifiesMEDIUM confidence
A small percentage of ingested fructose (<1%) appears to be directly converted to plasma TG. However, hyperlipidemic effects of larger amounts of fructose consumption are observed in studies using infused labeled acetate to quantify longer term de novo lipogenesis.
Why this rating
Based on review of tracer studies, but mechanisms for hyperlipidemic effects remain controversial.

- When ingested together, fructose and glucose are oxidized significantly faster (mean 66.0%) than when either sugar is consumed alone, indicating a synergistic metabolic interaction.Good
- Approximately 41% of ingested fructose is converted to glucose within 2-6 hours in normal non-exercising subjects, with lower conversion rates observed in women, obese, and diabetic individuals.Good
