Beta-alanine levels decrease in aged skeletal muscle, and supplementation with beta-alanine improves physical performance and executive function in middle-aged individuals.
If you are middle-aged or older and experiencing declines in physical performance or executive function, consider that beta-alanine levels in your muscles may be low. Supplementation with beta-alanine has been shown to improve these metrics.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
The level of β-alanine decreased in the skeletal muscle of aged mice (0.6-fold) (Figure 3). The literature reveals that β-alanine supplementation increased the physical performance and improved executive function induced by endurance exercise in middle-aged individuals [60].
Why this rating
The paper cites literature [60] for the human effect but relies on mouse models for the mechanism of depletion.
