Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise training can reverse impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes status in chronic stroke survivors.
If you have diabetes or pre-diabetes after a stroke, regular moderate exercise (like walking on a treadmill) for 6 months can significantly improve your blood sugar control. It may even reverse the diagnosis in more than half of cases, reducing your risk of another stroke.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
Preliminary findings in chronic stroke survivors demonstrated that moderate intensity treadmill training reverses impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes status in 58% of cases
Why this rating
Based on a preliminary report/pilot study (N=26 vs 21), requiring larger confirmation.

- Stroke survivors retain the physiological capacity to adapt to aerobic exercise training, resulting in significant improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2 peak) comparable to healthy sedentary adults.Good
- Unilateral aerobic exercise training (exercising only the paretic leg) improves vascular function and blood flow in the hemiparetic limb of stroke survivors.Moderate
