Mitochondrial/ER localization of 1,2-DAGs is positively related to insulin sensitivity, whereas mitochondrial ceramide accumulation is inversely related.
Mitochondrial health is crucial for insulin sensitivity. The presence of certain lipids (1,2-DAGs) in the mitochondria is associated with better insulin sensitivity, possibly by supporting mitochondrial dynamics. This suggests that supporting mitochondrial function through exercise may be more important than simply lowering total muscle fat.
In the mitochondrial/ER and nuclear fractions, 1,2-DAGs were positively related to, while ceramides were inversely related to, insulin sensitivity.
