Energy balance
Higher BMI at the time of diabetes diagnosis is a significant predictor of greater weight loss during the first 6 years following diagnosis.
If you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and have a higher BMI, you can expect to lose more weight in the first few years after diagnosis than those with a lower BMI. This is a common trend observed in clinical practice and is not a failure of willpower, but a physiological response to the diagnosis and treatment.
As expected, the higher the BMIdiag, the greater the weight loss after diagnosis... with approximately 0.4 kg per unit increase in BMI.
Why this rating
Consistent with multivariate analysis controlling for 20 baseline characteristics.

- In patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, recent weight gain (within one year prior to diagnosis) predicts subsequent weight loss after diagnosis, whereas long-term historical weight history (weight at age 20 or changes 10 years prior) does not predict post-diagnosis weight changes.Good
- Type 2 diabetic patients tend to experience a progressive decline in average body weight during the first 6 years after diagnosis, resulting in an average loss of 2.5 kg.Good
