Quarantine leads to reduced physical activity and increased sedentary behavior, which rapidly reverses beneficial metabolic and cardiovascular adaptations, leading to insulin resistance, increased blood pressure, and higher cardiovascular risk.
Maintain physical activity through home-based exercises, online classes, or walking in small spaces. Aim to interrupt sedentary time every 30 minutes. Even short bouts of activity add up to weekly recommendations and help prevent the rapid loss of metabolic benefits.
ModerateSupportsMEDIUM confidence
Limited physical activity and inability to take a regular walk out of one's home as a consequence of collective quarantine, may be associated with several metabolic effects that would increase the cardiovascular risk... many beneficial metabolic and cardiovascular adjustment in response to physical exercise can be lost in just two weeks of inactivity, and/or impairing aerobic capacity, and/or increasing blood pressure.
Why this rating
Based on physiological principles and observational data, not RCTs.

- Mandatory quarantine and social isolation induce chronic stress, anxiety, and depression, which physiologically increase sympathetic nervous activity and catecholamines, thereby accelerating atherosclerosis and increasing cardiovascular disease risk.Moderate
- Quarantine leads to unhealthy dietary habits, specifically increased consumption of energy-dense, shelf-stable foods (high in sugar, salt, and trans-fats) and decreased intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, resulting in micronutrient deficiency and increased oxidative stress.Moderate
- Vitamin D supplementation may reduce the severity and risk of COVID-19 infection, particularly in individuals with vitamin D deficiency, by modulating immune response and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines.Limited
