Mitochondrial DNA mutations and dysfunction contribute to aging, but the extent to which they drive normal aging versus progeroid syndromes is still debated.
Mitochondrial health is important for aging, but focusing solely on mtDNA mutations may be misleading. A holistic approach to health, including exercise and nutrition, supports mitochondrial function.

Although these animals exhibit late-onset mitochondrial myopathy and a decline in respiratory function, they have no obvious progeroid syndrome, which suggests that accumulation of mtDNA mutations and mitochondrial dysfunction are not sufficient to accelerate aging.
