Postoperative complications are also increased, including surgical site infection, dehiscence, venous thromboembolism, and pulmonary events [18]. While 30-day mortality may be unaffected, obesity consistently increases perioperative morbidity [19]. In rectal cancer surgery, for example, obesity is associated with higher anastomotic leak rates [20] and surgical site infection [21].
